CAMPO GIBRALTAR V CAJASOL OLAVIDE CIENCIAS - 14th OCTOBER 2007

Sunday the 14th of October saw the start of the new season for the Gibraltar rugby club, with the opening match against the recently renamed Cajasol Ciencias. A tough match in all aspects was fought between the sides, with unfortunately not one, but two members of the visiting team requiring paramedic and then ambulance assistance. These two incidents, one in either half, saw the game paused for no fewer than 25 minutes each. However, even with the unavoidable interruptions, to ensure the players' well being, both teams retained their high levels of confidence and determination throughout.

Gibraltar started off very strong in attack, but a slip in defence let them down, and saw Cajasol score between the posts. Shortly after the restart, a line out on the near side of the pitch developed into a maul by the Gibraltar forwards pushed them ever closer to the line. A breakaway run from the maul by flanker Chris Lyons, almost rewarded him with a try, but alas he was held up, just short of the line. This however didn't stop second row and captain, Chad Thomson from reaching over the ruck that had formed to score.

Not long after the previous score, a long range penalty into touch down near the Cajasol line gave Gibraltar another good attacking position. A clean take from the line out by Joey Holliday and a well worked rolling maul from his supporting forwards presented Wayne "Train" Tunbridge the opportunity to crash over the line. John Dibb's superbly taken conversion from the far left of the pitch took the Campo team in front by 12 points to 7.

A number of disciplinary issues which saw Gibraltar down to 14 men, gave Cajasol the opportunity to take a number of quick tap penalties, which ended up in a dubious try given in the far side corner despite numerous protests from the Gibraltar team claiming the player was tackled into touch by Albert Loddo (who deserted the forwards towards the end of last season to play on the wing.) This along with a penalty kick from their number 10 saw them draw out into the lead shortly before half time. 12-15

The second half saw both teams defending tightly. After the second injury interruption, and the arrival of fresh legs through various substitutions, saw a well worked manoeuvre by the Gibraltar backs, culminating in new arrival Jamie Phillips dodging a number of tackles before dragging himself over the line. This took Gibraltar into a leading position of 17-15 which they held onto for the majority of the second half.

However, after the second delay whilst awaiting the game's 2nd ambulance of the day, Gibraltar were occasionally careless, giving away a number of penalties which Cajasol gladly took advantage of. These 3 point penalty kicks as well as a reasonably long distance drop kick drew Cajasol back out into the lead, with the game ending Campo Gibraltar 17 - 24 Cajasol Ciencias.
