Inaugural GRFU Christmas Tournament a Great Succes

The inaugural GRFU Christmas Rugby Tournament 2009, a tag tournament, was held on Tuesday the 29th December at Victoria Stadium. Eight teams entered the tournament which was open to players of all ages, abilities, male or female. The tournament was a successful family festival of rugby.

The tournament was structured in 2 groups of 4, with the winners of group A playing the winners of group B, who would become the overall tournament winners. But as is the spirit of rugby it was more the taking part and the bringing together of Gibraltar’s rugby playing community and newcomers, making the evening so special.

Rugby on the rock is growing and is gathering great momentum in player participation for all ages, from Rugby Tots, through the schools and Gibraltar Dragons, the junior club, all the way to the senior rugby team. GRFU now boasts a competitive 2nd/development team that encompasses a number of colts, inexperienced, social and older players wanting to play rugby at a good social standard.

The tournament had over 80 players participating (and plenty of welcomed supporters) which was a great turn out over the festive season. Tag rugby involves squads made up of 10 players with 7 taking the field at any one time. There is no contact or scrums and so can be played by both sexes and all ages. The main object of Tag is to bring out players ball skills and spatial - to score tries without being “tagged”.

The final of the tournament was played between the Pillars of Hercules (PoH) and Gibraltar Spartans, with the PoH team winning 6 – 5 after extra time. Good performances were also recorded for the Colts who competed well and drew a game against a seniors team called the Pirates, and of course the Dragons who fielded the youngest overall team but more than competed against some organised teams. Team Cruz also had a fun tournament whereby the 3 fathers and uncles got to play with their sons and nephews.

The GRFU would like to thank all those that made this event possible and such a great success.
